aims to foster community in the book arts and the mediums that make up the discipline. BAD has classes weekly, and open studio access several days a week. There are Study Groups that run for a year at a time, and accept new members each September. We also host custom classes for groups of when asked. Classes

The classes range from beginner to intermediate in difficulty, with more complicated classes offered on demand. If you have a specific request, you can inquire about a custom class.

If no classes show up in Calendly, they are either sold out, or not yet scheduled.

Participants will be introduced to three quick sewing projects—three hole (pamphlet stitch), stab binding, and french link. The goal of the class is to familiarize participants with tools used for sewing, and to start to develop skills needed for larger projects.

Open to all skill levels, class is a good introduction to making a cased in book object. With material provided, and partially pre-prepared, attendees will learn to sew a book block (french link), tip in end pages, prepare the spine for casing in, construct the case, and case-in.

In Bookbinding 2 we will talk about alternate covering styles for cases, including half binding, quarter binding, and bindings with corners. The class will provide each participant with three partially finished book blocks, which we will make cases for.

This class walks through the basic operations of the Risograph duplicator, and how it can be used to produce printed matter. It focuses on getting all attendees to have hands on printing experience, and to familiarize themselves with the press and bindery tools.

An introduction to the letterpress equipment, which includes a platen and cylinder press. Attendees will be acquainted with the presses and the bindery. We will go through the basics of setting type, proofing the type, making adjustments, and printing.

Open Studio

People who have completed a basics class at BAD are able to sign up for Open Studio time. Open Studio is booked in 2 hour blocks, where you can work on personal projects using the Bookbinding, Risograph, Letterpress, or Zine Bindery equipment. Best for projects that can be completed in a day or weekend. If you need a longer amount of time, reach out.

Open Studio is reserved in 2 hour sessions and you may book two at a time if needed. If you need more time than that, please reach out before booking.

Study Groups

Free

Self Study group members do not need to pay the open studio fee to work on their works. There is a seperate, private link for people who are actively in those groups

Study Groups

BAD runs year long "Study Groups" in subjects related to the book arts. This year, we'll host a study group for Bookbinding, Dream Studies, Grants / Awards, & Letterpress. You can download the summary and course schedule for each study group by clicking the links above.

Study Groups are free for partcipants. We meet twice a month for a year, and work through the subject of each group as a community. Past members help host and teach current members.

Custom Classes

For groups of people who want specific instruction on the machines, want to know how to best approach printing for design or for art, or just want a specific aspect of the practice explained in greater detail, classes can be provided. Schedule a visit if it's your first time to the shop, to talk about projects, to walk us through what printed matter you'd like to make here. We can also host group visits, and give presentations of work and equipment.
